New tech stuff is like a ghetto sector network. A new ship module(s) that tie into creating or engaging with networks. For example let's say a planet has sat comm for the entire planet. It's also reasonable that they have several dishes pointing outwards. These could talk to other planets in the system with only several minutes delay but that planet would need line of sight. So a planet on the other side of the sun, or blocked by a moon would be unable to transmit any data. You could get around this by building space stations in orbit of planets and in deep space orbiting only the local sun. In good spots these could ensure that communication never stops even if the communication is a bit slower because it has a stopping point along the way.
New hacking tools could be wireless stuff since I think it's a bit lame that low lever hackers can't script kiddy there way into basic systems, but of course large organizations would stop this.
I could also do better jamming and EMP tech. What's more dangerous a torpedo filled with explosives or one filled with an EMP? At least with the explosives you know they're trying to kill you, they'd EMP you if they're trying to disable you. Although maybe this was giga brained before as EMP shielding could, in the future, be so easy to produce that it's ineffective. However rules stating as such, and giving options to cheap out on stuff like that are great. It could also be illegal in some sectors to have such technology so that police can easily shut you down and board you, a step away from requiring a backdoor hack into your engines.
