Building an Army

Heavy WIP stage...

What does the army look like and how can it be gamified? Let's start with some options for basic stats.

Static Information about a Unit

or stats that are upgraded on a level up.

Cohesion - How well do they work together?

Loyalty - How well do they obey orders from above?

Leadership - How much do their subordinates like them?

Grit - In the face of adversity how well can they perform?

Unit Levels

Formal training bumps up to level 2 automatically. When units are merged the Unit level reduces one level for each 20% of total manpower added. Formally trained units can never be lower than lvl2.

1 - No experience. Recruits arriving at training or informal militia of cause.

2 - 1-2 clashes

3 - 3-6 clashes

4 - 6-10 clashes

5 - 10+ clashes

Fluid information about a unit

Manpower - how many individual actors make up this unit?

Weapons/Ammo - What is available to the unit. Entire units could be listed here.

Veterancy - On a scale of 0-10 how seasoned/trained are they? (would be modified after each encounter)

Moral - Willingness to go into a fight. If it reaches 0 the unit disbands and the remaining people flee.

Unit Tags

These read a lot like Foci, so I wonder if Units could get Foci as they level up.

these are things that describe the unit and give it character

Disciplined - Loyalty +1, Once per Campaign when this unit would suffer a Moral loss the commander may elect not to OR take half of a negative end of mission effect.

NCO Corp - +1 to any Static stat. The versatility of this unit comes from its lower enlisted leaders being able to make decisions without command approval in the heat of conflict.

Centralized - Once per campaign may reroll the outcome of a mission, on a failure negative mission effects are doubled.

It is right about here that I realized I am creating a TTWG with rules from individual to Theater level, which was the plan for Novaris TTWG. I think the issue is that the shift from moving each ship, to moving a wing of ships is everything changes and wings of ships combat, in order to be resolved quickly, looks a lot like Faction combat from SWN. An excellent individual ship game already exist, Dropfleet commander. Novaris is not meant to be a "our ships blot the sun" style of game so even the Republic Navy may manage to get to hundreds of ships, getting to thousands is a political cry that will never see completion.
