Ship Naming Convention
Examples: SMT-100 | LMT-199 | DT-201 | PT-347 | LX-100.1 | CT-438
The letters are an acronym for the mission of the ship, spelled out they are:
Solid Mass Transport | Liquid Mass Transport | Data Transport | Passenger Transport | Luxury | Container
The first digit is the Major Ship Class identifier, an SMT-100 would be radically different than the SMT-200 while they both serve the same overall mission of moving raw solid mass. "Radically" is highly subjective, it could mean that the massive bay doors for scooping up asteroids is in the rear (200) instead of the front (100) typically a new version number would indicate a new construction blueprint, not simply an add-on or modification.
The 2nd and 3rd digits indicate any minor design changes made to the base line craft. For example, the LMT-100 has several large spheres that hold the stored liquid, but the attachment mechanisms to remove/add liquid are at the tops (relative to the command deck) and require tubes to be attached and the tubes are expected to provide suction. The LMT-199 has the spheres with built in tubes and systems that provide suction, allowing the LMT to provide liquids to unpowered stations, craft, or even to just dump it into vacuum.
The 2nd and 3rd digits are assigned more or less at random, some engineers prefer to make alterations in numerical order while others pick the number they like most. Some ships may have more than 99 variations or systems that can be upgraded, this is where decimals come into play and are typically not shown externally. What I mean is that, for example, the LX-100.1 would have a public transmission name of LX-100, while only engineers would see the .1 that follows. These changes are to be so minor that only engineers, or the requestee would even notice or hidden adjustments to the ship. If a Tutinari, who has different relief needs to Asida, were to purchase a LX-100 they may not want to broadcast that they have a Tutinari toilet, but that information would be important to engineers.
While other ship manufactures wouldn't include information like this in the Ship Class naming convention, Rifgna Industries ethos is that a ship should be completely identifiable by its Ship Class Name since no two ships quite identical.
Consumers tend to think this is a bit overkill for the brand, it's public name chosen by it's owner should suffice for such things and a unified Ship Class naming convention has its strengths and shouldn't be diluted by every single modification having a unique Class name. Most people will only refer to a Rifgna ship by its 3 letter designation, and maybe its digits if its relevant to the vessel.
